Is there a cure for substance addiction?

Addiction is a chronic, progressive, and fatal disease. While it cannot be cured, it can be successfully managed through rehabilitation and treatment.

How do I know if my loved one is struggling with substance addiction?

While there are a wide range of signs, the key to look for is change. It is important to look for changes in a person’s personality, attitude, physical appearance, and behavior.

Physical signs:

  • Dramatic changes to sleep pattern (unable to sleep/sleeping at unusual times)
  • Changes in eating habits (loss of or increased appetite)
  • Hyperactivity
  • Poor physical coordination
  • Vomiting or excessive sweating
  • Tremors
  • Deterioration of hygiene or physical health
  • Needle marks or unusual bruises on lower arm
  • Watery, red eyes or pupils larger or smaller than usual

Behavioral Signs:

  • Dramatic change in overall attitude and personality with no identifiable causes
  • Drop in performance at work or grades at school; skipping school/late for work
  • Repeated dishonesty
  • Oversensitivity or resentful behavior
  • Paranoia
  • Unreachable; excessive need for privacy
  • Forgetfulness; difficulty paying attention
  • Suspicious or secretive behavior
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Changes in friends/activities/hobbies

At Sober Living Houston, we believe the 12 Steps are the most effective method for successful recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. We utilize the 12 Steps in our program as a tool to provide our clients with the skills to successfully treat and manage their addiction.
